If you think the aggressive illegal robocallers would be a thing of the past.
There are many kinds of robocall scams, here’s just one of them.
Here’s how the scam works:
1 - A retail service provider (RSP) or VoIP company, accepts a new customer, urgently asking for multiple new telephone numbers.
A credit check on the company comes back clean.
The numbers are added and the customer starts making calls on the numbers with “A” attestation.
Attestation or attesting means calls are less likely to be seen as robocalls by the terminating customer telephone provider.
2 - Yet, something isn’t quite right.
The address of the “new” customer doesn’t match the business address.
And, no physical phones are needed.
They are only using softphones or computer software.
3 - Sure enough within a week.
The RSP provider gets “Theft of Service” and “Fast Traffic Pumping” from their wholesale provider, who begins blocking the numbers.
4 - After some investigation, it seems the bad actor had stolen the identity of a reputable company, assuming their credit rating, address, and other details.
5 - The payments made to create the account all bounced.
The RSP gets stiffed for the calls made by the bad actor.
6 - Even more incredible, the bad actor tried ordering new DIDs on the same RSP with a new stolen identity. If the scam worked once, it will likely work again.
What can we learn from this?
RSP should do a thorough background check.
Then the RSP should monitor new customers for a few weeks.
Bad actors are not going to have the patience for a period of supervision.
Remember that bad actors will find any vulnerability and more.
That RSP and providers need to take a Spy-vs-Spy approach to protecting access to the telephone network.

Without the benefit of your core network protections, a user on the go could become infected without your knowledge, and even introduce the infection to your broader environment when they reconnect with your network.
2 - Phishing/Spear-Phishing: Criminals use email to try to get users to click links, download files, and enter credentials into web pages or forms. These emails are commonly tailored to a specific business or individual who is considered most vulnerable. In addition, the data on the device itself may be sensitive, personal, or contain company intellectual property.
4 - VPN Avoidance: Let’s face it, employees don’t always follow the security policies we put in place. A VPN can provide a tremendous amount of protection, but if it is overly cumbersome for the user, it will be avoided to the detriment of your security when you rely on VPN alone. A user who simply wants to check their personal email or social media accounts could quickly run into trouble.
